7 views from the plane window

Tag along for the ride with this spectacular collection of mid-flight snaps.

With high quality smartphone cameras within arm’s reach (in flight mode of course), the collection of breathtaking images captured mid-flight is rapidly growing. Magnificent aerial cityscapes, rippling clouds, expanses of ocean and faraway mountain peaks are all making their way onto phone screens around the world as passengers snap and share from high in the sky.

Inspiring, these images hint at the story of a journey and share the unique perspective of a landscape only possible from mid-air. Here are a few of the best we discovered.

Chicago

The windy city’s skyline and the undulating banks of Lake Michigan are perfectly captured by this passenger as their plane begins its descent into Chicago. To the left, the historic Navy Pier stretches out into the water, while the right sees another aircraft snapped on its ascent.

Rottnest Island

Glorious Rottnest Island is a patterned wonderland from above, with curved beaches and coasts giving way to bodies of naturally occurring salt lakes. 18 km off the West Australian coast, it looks as refreshing from above as it is for the lucky travellers reveling on the passing speedboat below.

Qatar

Qatar’s coastal capital Doha is a topographic treat from mid-air. Jutting out into the Persian Gulf, its cluster of skyscrapers hug the coastline and give way to a mass of land beyond.

Swiss alps

The craggy peaks of the Swiss Alps look like a model landscape from the plane window of this passing flight. The crisp, clear day reveals a smattering of snow coating the mountaintops while puffs of cloud rest just above.

Texas

The plains of the southwest are captured in all their rich, dusty glory in this aerial snap over Texas. With looming mountain ranges calling to be explored, it nods to the vast expanse of America and all its remote beauty.

Hawaii

Aloha! Palm trees and turquoise water positively beckon passengers as this flight passes over one of Hawaii’s stunning beaches. With white sand, lush foliage and just the occasional wave in view, it looks as inviting at 10,000 feet as sitting on a beach with a cocktail.

Beirut

The capital of Lebanon looks impressive from the air as this plane swoops low over its crowded coastline. Bright blue swimming pools echo the colour of the surrounding water and boats line the marina, ready for a Mediterranean adventure.
