Films to fight antibiotic resistance

Film and med come together in a Tropfest-backed short film competition, with up to $10k in prizes.

Antibiotics are a powerful tool in the medical world. But because of overuse and misuse, they are now losing that power. Bacterial infections that were once easily cured with antibiotics are becoming harder to treat.

This is called antibiotic resistance. The World Health Organization says it is one of the greatest global threats to our health today. And as Australia has one of the highest antibiotic prescription rates globally, with around 24 million prescriptions issued each year, the issue hits especially close to home.

“Antibiotic resistance is here – it’s a serious health issue already in our community, but there are simple actions individuals can do to help stop its spread,” says Dr Lynn Weekes, CEO of NPS MedicineWise.

“Without action today we face a future where antibiotics are no longer effective against bacterial infections. A recent prediction from the UK stated that antibiotic resistance could lead to an extra 10 million deaths a year worldwide by 2050.”

#SaveTheScript short film competition

To help raise awareness and fight antibiotic resistance this cold and flu season, Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival, has partnered with NPS MedicineWise to launch an industry-first short film competition.

Filmmakers of all levels are invited to create a short film of up to 45 seconds about the threat of antibiotic resistance. As well as delivering a vitally important health message to Australians, winning films will share in a prize pool of $10,000, as well as global exposure through Tropfest’s platforms.

“Storytellers have a unique opportunity to use their craft to raise awareness about this global health threat,” says Tropfest Managing Director, Michael Laverty. “We at Tropfest know Australians to be incredibly creative and we’re excited about the unique challenge this competition presents. We’re looking forward to seeing what stories are shared.”
