A recent New York Times article delved into the health secrets of this island where people reach the age of 90 at two and a half times the rate Americans do. Not only living longer, Ikarians are also living healthier lives, living around 8 to 10 years longer before succumbing to cancers and cardiovascular disease. So what is it about this Mediterranean oasis that is so conducive to long life? The Ikarian diet is one of homegrown vegetables, plenty of legumes and greens, rich in olive oil, moderate alcohol, low in dairy (except goat’s milk) and full of medicinal herbs and honey found on the island. Naps are frequent, clocks are virtually nonexistent and sex habits in the elderly population, according to a preliminary study, are regular.
