Positive coping strategies for men

How you cope can be translated from a survey to help develop more effective mental health programs.

Men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women, two times more likely to have substance use problems, far more likely to take part in dangerous and impulsive activities, and significantly less likely to seek help when they need it.

The Black Dog Institute is undertaking research to develop new and more effective self-help programs designed specifically for men, particularly those at risk of suicide. And they need the input of as many Australian men as possible.

If you’re a male aged 18 and over, you can help out by participating in a confidential online survey about the strategies you use to cope with tough times and pick yourself up when feeling down. We all have times when life feels hard, and it can be a struggle to get through the day. These moods may have come out of nowhere, or be caused by life circumstances.

All you need is access to a computer and an internet connection to participate. If you think you can get involved, register your interest here to have the survey link sent to you when it is live. Remember, the details you share will help other Australian men.

This survey is the second stage of a significant research project called the Men’s Health study that is funded by the Australian Government and beyondblue, following the first phase of direct content with men through focus groups and interviews. The information that is collected will go a long way in developing mental health programs that work, instead of a band-aid solution. As with all of The Black Dog Institute’s research, the survey is fully approved by human ethics and scientifically peer reviewed.

To take part in the survey, register your interest here. For more information contact the researchers at menshealth@unsw.edu.au or visit blackdog.org.au
