Sleep outs inspired by nature

These beautiful travel accommodation ideas take their lead from the great outdoors.

If camping isn’t your idea of a holiday but you still want to stay connected to the land, some of these nature-inspired hotels and retreats around the world may be just the trick.

Treebones, California

On California’s sweeping Big Sur coast is Treebones, a coastal yurt community overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Along with their yurts, they offer the opportunity to stay in their ‘human nest’, a woven wood-art shelter designed to sleep two. Climb the wooden ladder up to the nest and sleep on a futon looking out over the sea.

Kolarbyn, Sweden

This ecolodge is found outside Skinnskatteberg by the clear water lake Skärsjön. Stay in one of twelve traditional forest huts on firm beds under sheepskin rugs. These tiny, moss-covered huts have no electricity but have crackling fire places and candles to provide light. Guests prepare meals over an open fire and do their own chores like fetch water and pick berries.

Canopy Treehouses, Cairns

Tucked away in the Cairns Highlands region – around 90 minutes’ drive from Cairns – are the Canopy Treehouses. Here 100 acres of forest await, providing a rich chorus of birdsong every morning and home to these beautiful timber treehouses. Settle back on furniture crafted from rainforest timbers and recline on hammocks taking in the vista of green.

Treehotel, Sweden

Nestled deeply in the unspoilt nature of Harads, north Sweden, is the Treehotel. With views of the surging Lule River and miles and miles of forest, it’s absolute serenity and the accommodation is designed to reflect this. Each room is unique in its design and furniture and all are constructed to have minimal impact on nature. The Mirrorcube is a perfect cube-shaped hide out reached by a 12-metre-long bridge. With all external walls covered in reflective glass, it perfectly echoes its surrounds.
