Solariums soon to be history

Victoria and Queensland have joined the ban on solariums.

The dangers of solariums are clear – just think back to the well-publicised case of Melbourne woman Clare Oliver, who died of melanoma in 2007 at age 26 and spent the last weeks of her life bravely fighting to spread the message that “No Tan is Worth Dying For.”

The good news is, we’re now closer than ever to solariums being history in Australia, with Victoria and Queensland following in the footsteps of New South Wales, South Australia and the ACT by introducing new state bans on solariums, effective from the end of 2014 (QLD) and start of 2015 (VIC).

The Cancer Council suggests that 281 cases of melanoma and 43 deaths are caused by solariums in Australia every year, and that about one in six melanomas in Australians aged 18 to 29 could be prevented with a nation-wide ban. Besides, you don’t need a tan to look good anyway – and if you do really want that bronzed glow, there are plenty of fake tanning products that give a pretty good result these days. Whatever you do, just stay sun smart!
