Need another reason to sleep? Sleep deprivation is costing Australia $5.1 billion annually.
Much of this cost can be attributed to lost productivity at work, according to research by Deloitte Access Economics, which highlights the widespread sleeping difficulties faced by Australians. To help combat this, organisations should take steps to ensure their employees are well rested, says Cathryn Curtin, managing partner of People Diagnostix, which offers number of sleep health training programs to businesses.
“Not all sleep deprived individuals will understand that they have a problem because as humans we are very good at normalising the way we feel,” she says. “It is often not until someone has been treated for a sleeping problem that he or she finally comes to understand how much he or she were really underperforming.”
