Thinking of making healthy changes to your life? Here’s how to set your plan into action.
You’ve worked hard and built a good life for yourself and your family, so it’s no wonder you’re thinking about the long term when it comes to better health.
You’re part of a generation that associates better health with the bigger picture – mental wellbeing and happiness are important to you, while things like physical appearance are of less concern.
And you understand that prevention is better than cure. 1 in 3 are motivated by a previous health scare to make positive changes, and 2 in 3 agree that reducing your long-term risk of disease is an important part of better health.
How often do you think about taking the first step? 40% of Baby Boomers say they think about improving their health every day. That’s a lot of thinking. The intention is there – it’s just a matter of turning that into action.
The good news is, your generation is a bit more self-motivated than others, needing less support from family, friends and health professionals. Given the right tools and resources, you can self-educate. But reading or watching content is different from making changes. To really reach your goals, you need nudges and reminders to keep you on track.
To find out what better health really means to your generation, we asked Australians aged 50 to 64* about what motivates you, what you find challenging, and what steps you could take to improve your health.
Here’s what we learned…
Better health is about overall wellbeing
- 92% agree that taking the first step towards better health will have long term benefits.
- 88% agree better health is about more than just being healthy, it’s about happiness.
- 2 in 3 say reducing risk of disease is what ‘better health’ means
- And 60% say mental wellbeing is important, too.
What stops us from taking the first step?
Achieving better health feels great. So what keeps us from getting started?
- 60% say they don’t enjoy it.
- 59% find it too hard.
- Almost 1 in 2 don’t know where to start.
But it helps to just take the first step – whatever that is for you. Start somewhere, and the rest will follow.
So, what step would you take?
- 69% say the first step would be cutting back on the amount you eat – and working more fruit and veggies into your diet.
- Nearly 1 in 2 would set a daily step target to get them moving.
- And over 1 in 3 say looking up healthy recipes is a good start
- The first step is easy, right? Then it’s just one foot in front of the other, and repeat.
- 76% say setting personal goals to aim for would make it easier to stay on track towards better health
- 49% say regular health assessments and reviews would help.

*The results are based on research conducted by ACA Research with a sample of 1,024 Australians aged 25 or older. Fieldwork was conducted between the 1st and 8th of April 2015, with quotas set on age, gender and location based on population estimates sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
