Job description:

Limbs2Riddims uses hip hop and rap to foster the talent of youth from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in Melbourne’s west. I teach hip hop workshops and dance professionally. Limbs2Riddims runs hip hop classes free of charge aimed at newly arrived and refugee youth – I write the funding applications to ensure this continues.

How does your job contributes to better health?

Self expression through our hip hop programs improves participants’ physical and mental health, outlook and self esteem. Dance plays a huge role in many cultures and is a fun and ‘cool’ way to engage youth and promote social cohesion and community connection.

What do you love about your job?

Being constantly inspired by our students’ natural rhythm and dance ability. Many of our students have never had formal dance training and it’s rewarding to watch their raw talent flourish.

I love being able to give youth additional ways to express themselves through dance. When students arrive to Australia they often struggle with expression, due to the language barrier. Dance gives them a chance to express themselves physically – a liberating experience.

From your work experience what health tips do you have?

Physical and mental health go hand-in-hand. If you feel good you look good, and if you look good you feel good. Try to maintain your health and not slack off because it’s hard to get back into it. My biggest tip is to set goals and achieve them.
